GANGTOK, June 17: Tourism stakeholders in Sikkim has hailed the international status of the Bagdogra airport which is expecting its first foreign flight tomorrow courtesy Druk Airlines.
Druk Airlines is starting its first flight services from Paro in Bhutan to Bagdogra and vice versa from tomorrow.
The development has been warmly welcomed by Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS), the apex body of the tour operators of the State.
“From now, sky is the limit for tourism in Sikkim”, said TAAS general secretary Lukendra Rasaily on the commencement of foreign airline services from Bagdogra airport, 125 kms away from Gangtok.
While welcoming the foreign air services at Bagdogra, the TAAS general secretary said that now Bhutan has initiated its services from Bagdogra, more and more other airlines will be coming forward.
“It will improve foreign tourist traffic in Sikkim, Darjeeling and Kalimpong”, said Mr. Rasaily. More foreign clientele will not only bring more benefits to the people here but will also bring more professionalism in the tourism business, he added.
Sikkim has been getting a fair share of foreign tourists from Bhutan and the tourists were picked up from Phuntsoling on the Indo-Bhutan border.
Now with the Bagdogra air services, the tourist can come straight to Bagdogra and reach Sikkim in quick time thus getting more time to spend here,” said Mr. Rasaily.

The Minister will fly to Bhutan and to Bangkok on a Druk flight which shall be operating from Bagdogra. As per the information the air services will be provided four days a week i.e. Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.
