Chamling renews demand for berth in Central govt

Gangtok, June 17 (Agencies): Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling on Tuesday renewed his demand for a berth in the Central government, saying a representation for the ‘sensitive’ border state will cement the emotional integration of the Sikkimese with the people from other parts of the country. “The Himalayan state has had no representation in the Union government since its merger with India in 1975,” he told External Affairs Minister S M Krishna in New Delhi.
According to an official release issued here, Chamling asked Krishna to convey the local people’s sentiments with respect to their rightful claim for a berth in the Central Cabinet to the UPA leadership. He also demanded accommodation of the bureaucrats of the Sikkim cadre at the Centre, an issue the ruling SDF has been raising for the past few months. The state’s lone Lok Sabha MP P D Rai too joined his leader in airing the demand for Sikkim’s representation in the Central government as a matter of right.
