KASKI, June 19 – When most of his classmates were on their way to school with their bags full of textbooks, Anil Gurung, national footballer, would quietly sneak out to the football field. Despite his parents’ dislike for the sport for the fear that he would spoil his studies Anil continued to chase his footballing dreams.

Today, Gurung has carved an identity as one of the most dreaded marksman of his era in Nepali football. Now, this 22-year-old Pokhreli, who made his debut for the national side about three years ago, is headed to the world famous Chelsea Football Club for a trial for the club’s reserve team.

His family, too, has come around and is happy with the way things have worked out for him.

“I used to worry about his future since he had no interest in studies but now things are going pretty well for him. I hope he improves with time,” said Bishu Gurung, his grandmother.

Sahara Club, a local football Club in Pokhara, which has braches in the UK as well, had applied for Anil’s trial a year ago. Gurung will first make an attempt to get into the working club of Chelsea and subsequently try for the reserve team.

During a farewell programme hosted by Sahara Club in Pokhara today, Gurung said, “Opportunities don’t come very often and I am going to the make the best of it.”

The news has sent all of Pokhara into frenzy with almost all youngsters dreaming of getting similar opportunities.

In England, Gurung will go though a four-month long trial, where he will put his footballing skills on display, said

treasurer of Sahara UK Dilip Gurung. Chelsea will take care of all his expenses.

Gurung, a product of the Sahara Football Academy, was just 12 when he joined the youth files. He made his debut for the Brigade Boys Club and has since traded his skills at most top-flight clubs in Kathmandu.
