GANGTOK, June 27: Rajya Sabha member Dilip Ray’s fifth MayFair resort unveiling at Ranipool here today evening stamped a political history for Sikkim when the inauguration ceremony brought Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and former Chief Minster Nar Bahadur Bhandari on a common public dais after a bitter unending political rivalry of around 17 years.
It gets even better from here.
Mr. Chamling, a minister during the Bhandari regime till his dismissal in 1992, displayed his humbleness with lavish praises on the former Chief Minister by crediting him with the MayFair debut in Sikkim.
“Today I am very happy that our senior leader former Chief Minister and Sikkim Congress president is also here. Today’s inauguration programme happened due to him”, said the Chief Minister who was sharing the inauguration dais with Mr. Bhandari and a host of other dignitaries.
Moments earlier, casting their political differences aside, both the former and present Chief Ministers displayed a rare solidarity by jointly unveiling the inauguration plague thereby officially making the MayFair Spa & Resort, Gangtok operational from today.
Continuing his magnanimity, Mr. Chamling went as far as to credit the Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee president with the opening of MayFair resort in Sikkim.
“He (Bhandari) has brought investors from Orissa to Sikkim and I want to thank him for this. The credit goes to him for this hotel”, said Mr. Chamling.
It may be added here that the Gangtok MayFair Spa & Resort is spread over 25 acres of the property on lease from Mr. Bhandari.
The Chief Minister in his inaugural address pointed out that the growth of tourism in Sikkim was very encouraging with every second person in the State being a tourist. He expressed his confidence the luxury resort of MayFair in Gangtok will greatly attract high end tourists in Sikkim. Now Sikkim can offer the best hospitality services to the visiting tourists, he said.
Mr. Chamling highlighted the peacefulness USP of Sikkim. Sikkim is the most peaceful State in the country with law abiding citizens and the State government is very much investor friendly for eco-based industries, he said. He requested the Gangtok MayFair to use local persons for its manpower.
While extending warm welcome to investors in Sikkim, the Chief Minister also asserted that the State government is committed to local employment in the industries being established in Sikkim. “We are very serious on this and we don’t want any compromise in the agreements at the cost of our people. Please take it (local employment) very seriously”, he said determinedly.
Earlier, the MayFair chairman cum managing director Dilip Ray thanked the Chief Minister and his government for the support shown to him for the realization of a MayFair resort in Gangtok.
Mr. Ray informed that MayFair chain has already pumped in Rs. 60 crores for the Gangtok MayFair Spa & Resort which he said was first of its kind in Northeast region. He also highlighted the coming additions to the Gangtok MayFair Spa & Resort that will see the overall investment reach to Rs. 100 crores.
“Very soon after we get the five star classification, we will open a casino spread over 4000 sq feet. In course of time, we will upgrade the casino to 30,000 sq feet and make it a international standard casino”, said Mr. Ray.
The opulence of Mayfair Spa & Resort can be judged by its amazing architecture crafted over a lush green forest area of 25 acres and an equally awesome tariff which starts from Rs. 12,000 and goes up to anywhere around Rs. 35,000. It has 63 luxuriously furnished rooms with some select villas having their own controlled dip pools.
The Chief Minister was given also given tour of the Gangtok MayFair Spa & Resort by Mr. Ray and his team.
Today inauguration ceremony of the Gangtok MayFair Spa & Resort saw the participation of the Deputy Speaker, cabinet ministers, MLAs, top brass of State bureaucracy and tourism stakeholders of Sikkim.
Following the launch, the guests were regaled with a cultural display at the open air amphitheater of the resort.
Again, politics took a backseat here as both Mr. Chamling and Mr. Bhandari watched the presentations sitting side by side a sofa.
