Tripartite talks again on 24 Aug, GJMM told

Posted by Ramesh Khati on July 15, 2009

SILIGURI, 14 JULY: The third round of tripartite talks on the Darjeeling statehood issue involving the Centre, the West Bengal government and the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) will take place on 24 August, the state administration confirmed today.
The Darjeeling district magistrate, Mr Surendra Gupta, has written to the GJMM supremo, Mr Bimal Gurung, this afternoon and formally informed him about this development.
In the communiqué, the DM has also urged the GJMM to call off the ongoing indefinite shutdown in the Darjeeling Hills that began at noon on 13 July.
“We hope, in view of the tripartite talks, that the GJMM will concede to our appeal. But a response from their leadership is yet to come,” the DM said.
The third round of tripartite talks will be held in New Delhi. The first and second rounds of the tripartite dialogue were also held in the national capital on 8 September and 29 December in 2008, respectively.
On both the occasions, the talks were held at the bureaucratic level. However, the GJMM has been insisting that the next round of negotiations must be held at the political level and the party is likely to demand an affirmation on this before agreeing to attending on 24 August.
