The new Nepalese government says it will discharge child soldiers who can now look forward to a new life after years of bloodshed.

The Maoist People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had recruited thousands of minors to survive the 10-year “People’s War”, the Peace and Reconstruction Ministry said on Thursday.

The ministry said that altogether 4,008 ex-PLA fighters, who were disqualified during a headcount conducted by the United Nations in 2007, would be discharged by November 2. They include 2,973 people who were recruited when they were still minors, and 1,035 who were inducted after 2006 in violation of the peace pact.

It further said that the discharge process would begin on Friday and the ‘mentally and physically scarred’ child soldiers can finally look forward to a new life as free men and women after years of bloodshed.
