Posted by Ramesh Khati on July 27, 2009

SILIGURI, 26 JULY: The Akhil Bhartiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad state president, Mr Birsa Tirke today criticised yesterday’s decision by some local leaders to block vehicles plying to and from the Darjeeling hills. “There was no official decision to hold up traffic and we have not taken any decision to ‘paralyse’ Siliguri from Monday,” said Mr Tirke.
The Terai unit of the ABAVP, led by Mr Rajesh Toppo, served a deputation to the Siliguri SDO on Saturday which spoke of paralysing the city if the administration failed to convince the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha to withdraw its extended bandh from certain parts of the sub-division.
The ABAVP state president has also warned Mr Toppo from taking any decision in future. Mr Toppo, however, was not available for comment. The ABAVP leadership has decided to form a trade union to voice problems of tea workers at a meeting here today.
