Posted by Ramesh Khati on July 29, 2009

Campaigner Joanna Lumley has laid a wreath in memory of Gurkhas killed in conflicts around the world.

The British actress is continuing her visit to Nepal where she has been spending time in Kathmandu.

Since her arrival over the weekend she has received a heroine’s welcome following her pivotal role in the campaign to secure settlement rights for Gurkhas in the UK.

Lumley’s late father was an officer in the Gurkha regiment, so her visit to the country is an emotional experience.

After laying down her wreath she said: “Never had a country more faithful friends than you, and there it is written down with the crossed Khukuris, it reminds me of all those fine brave men including my dear father.”

The rest of Joanna Lumley’s visit includes a trip to Pokhara to meet members of the charity the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

While towards the end of the week she will visit the birthplace of Buddha, Lumbini.
