Centre to put Gorkhaland onus on state

Posted by Ramesh Khati on August 11, 2009

DARJEELING/NEW DELHI: The Centre is likely to put the ball in West Bengal’s court while discussing the issue of
a separate state Gorkhaland on Tuesday when the three parties, including Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), meet in
the Capital for the third round of tripartite talks.

As there seems to be no takers for the statehood idea in the government, sources said the Union home ministry would instead explore the option of giving “more powers” to the Darjeeling hills.

“If the Gorkha representatives insist on statehood as the only option, the ministry will ask the state to take the call and first pass the required resolution in the Bengal Assembly to this effect,” a senior official said, adding, “the Centre’s role will come up only later, if at all the government here looks at the idea positively.”

Meanwhile, as the talks will not be held at the political level, top GJM leaders Bimal Gurung (president) and Roshan Giri (general secretary) will not participate in the meeting. GJM instead left it to central committee leaders Amar Lama and Anmole Prasad to lead a 12-member team to Delhi.
