Kurseong man kidnapped

Guwahati, Aug. 11: A 43-year-old man from Kurseong, working as a railway engineer in Sonitpur district of Assam, has been abducted, allegedly by a faction of National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB).

Police said the abductors had demanded Rs 1.5 crore, suspension of army operations and an end to all works undertaken by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) on the north bank of the Brahmaputra for the release of Sanjay Kumar Lama.

The engineer had gone to Batasipara to supervise the construction of a bridge when he was whisked away by four armed men on August 8.

According to a senior police officer here, the kidnappers contacted a colleague of Lama over the phone and told him about their demands. He said the Ranjan Daimary faction of NDFB might be behind the abduction. “The outfit has been at the receiving end for quite some time and hence, wants army operations suspended in Sonitpur.”

Sources said the ransom had been sought from NFR. They added that the railway works had led to army presence in Sonitpur and the flush-out of the militants.

Antu Deka, Lama’s brother-in-law, told The Telegraph over the phone from Rangapara in the district that the family had received a call last evening. “Since Lama’s wife is not in a position to talk, I attended the call. The caller refused to identify the group to which he belonged and said they had no animosity towards Lama.”

The abductors also allowed Lama to speak to his family members, including his wife.

An operation was launched by police, the army and the Assam Rifles on the north bank of the river as well as in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh to rescue the hostage.

Pinky Boro Lama has appealed to the abductors to release her husband unharmed. Hearing the incident, she had rushed to Rangapara from Kurseong, where she stays with two sons and mother-in-law.
