Meghalaya’s exotic Umiam lake to be desilted

Posted by Ramesh Khati on August 14, 2009

Shillong, Aug 13 (PTI) After decades of dithering, the scenic but highly polluted Umiam Lake (Barapani) on the outskirts of Shillong would be desilted soon.

Initiative in this regard has already been taken up with environment and forests ministry, Shillong MP and Union Minister of State for Water Resources Vincent Pala said today.

A joint inspection of the lake would be carried out in September, he said.

The lake, a favourite tourist destination, is faced with grave pollution threat largely due to dumping of wastage generated in Shillong.

Experts have pointed out that the pollution of Umkhrah and Umshyrpi rivers due to the increase in urban agglomeration in Shillong has led to the pollution of Umiam.

The disposal of urban solid waste from municipal, cantonment and four urban localities in the two rivers is another factor leading to pollution of the lake, environmentalists have pointed out.
