Posted by Ramesh Khati on August 14, 2009

Aizawl, Aug 13:There has been a proposal, not only to extend the railway line from Bairabi to Sairang, about 20 km from the capital Aizawl city, but up to Lawngtlai the southernmost corner of Mizoram, Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla said here today.

Rubbishing the critics of construction of railway inside the state, Lal Thanhawla said no nation or tribe has ever been assimilated due to construction of railways.

“Mizoram has a floating population of around two lakhs coming from neighbouring countries and states who are doing odd jobs,” he said.

If the Mizos take up the odd jobs, now in the hands of the floating population who siphoned crores of rupees outside the state, they would automatically leave the state, the chief minister said.

He said railway network would not only bring commodities at lower prices, it would be most useful for export of the agriculture and horticulture products from the state that would benefit the farmers.

“Mizoram is floating on oil and natural gas. Railway would be the most important for exploration and transport of the mineral wealth,” he said, adding eight oil and gas explorer companies are prospecting in the state which included two foreign firms.
