Chamling announces schemes for Sikkim

GANGTOK, 14 AUG: The Sikkim chief minister Mr Pawan Chamling has announced an array of development-oriented schemes on the occasion of Independence Day. In his Independence Day message Mr Chamling focused on the need to counter the negative fallout of the global recession. He said that the state government in response to the recession had provided three fiscal stimulus packages in the form of tax relief to boost demand and increased expenditure on public projects to create more employment and public assets. “Our prime need is to focus on self-reliance and to augment our internal revenue generation base as quickly as possible,” said Mr Chamling.
Reiterating on the need to generate more internal revenue, Mr Chamling said: “Hydro-power generation, promotion of eco-tourism, setting up of clean industries like pharmaceutical units have been identified as core sectors to strengthen our revenue base on a long term basis.” He further urged the people to adopt austerity measures both in their offices and rationalize needs and wants.
The state government has targeted to generate combined revenue of Rs 1500 crores annually by 2015 in addition to other lapsable and non-lapsable pool of resources and other similar grants from the Centre.
The chief minister further stressed on the need to re-orient the education system to meet new demands and requirement of the new age. He also announced that the state government would give free sponsorship to students securing admission in 20 best universities of the world. Apart from scholarships and sponsorships for students, vocational training institutes would be set up in every constituency in the state, it is informed.
A 575-bed super specialty hospital would be built in the state to provide medical facilities to the people. The free vaccination of Hepatitis ‘B’ earlier given to children below one year would now be expanded to all children below five years.
A package of medical and health care measures to take care of women and children in distress including the poor and needy and the old and the physically disadvantaged would also be provided under the Mukhya Mantri Jeewan Raksha Kosh, announced Mr Chamling.
On the occasion of Independence Day, the state government would launch Poultry and Dairy Missions to generate more poultry and dairy products in the state.
