Chamling pledges to follow Central security directives

GANGTOK, 18 AUG(The Statesman): Sikkim chief minister Mr Pawan Chamling (in picture) had assured the Centre that the state would adhere to the central directives to upgrade its security mechanism, as directed by the Centre from time to time. While speaking at the chief ministers’ conference on internal security held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on Monday, Mr Chamling reiterated the responsibility of the Sikkimese people in securing environment security, water security and human security for the entire country.
“Sikkim, as always, will be happy to play the crucial role of peace preacher in the region and the country as a whole” said Mr Chamling.
According to an official release, Mr Chamling spoke of the steps taken by the state government to issue identity cards for the Sikkim subjects and their descendents to maintain their distinct identity of residing in the state.
The chief minister also spoke of the activities undertaken by the state government on issues relating to internal security, border management and modernisation of the police force in the state. Mr Chamling further urged the Centre to circulate a model law to ensure proper security at religious and historical monuments, malls, hotels and other places with large foot-falls. He said that the special branch in Sikkim were advised to install appropriate security measures at these places. The Chief Minister was accompanied to the meeting by the state Chief Secretary, Mr TT Dorji, DGP Mr CM Ravindran, principal secretary to the chief minister, Mr RS Basnet among others.
