Local diseases surface in Arunachal district

Itanagar, Aug 20 (PTI) Scrub Typhus, a disease which kills a victim within 5 to 7 days if untreated and having symptoms of fever and cough, has resurfaced in Kalaktang area of West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Two persons were diagnosed with the disease which locally known as ‘kala ghao’ and successfully treated at a medical camp on August 15 and 16, but an infant girl could not be saved, the chief medical officer of the general hospital here, Moji Jini, who had led a team of 22 doctors to the camp, said on their return.

The disease also causes headache, muscle pain and gastro-intestinal problems and could even cause hemorrhage and intravascular coagulation, he said.

According to state epidemiologist L Jampa, the disease was caused by poor personal hygiene and transmitted by lice.

He had brought it to the notice of the West Kameng district doctors now undergoing training here.
