Pashupatinath Temple Row: Nepal Maoists’ cadres thrash Indian main priests

Posted by Ramesh Khati on September 5, 2009

(TelegraphNepal)Prachanda’s fresh self declaration that he was not at all an atheist and his party, the Nepal Communist Party-Unified Maoists, was also not against any religion came under suspicion when his party cadres first threatened, second manhandled and third thrashed, the newly appointed main priests of the Indian origin at the Lord Pashupatinath Temple, September 4, 2009.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 addressing the inauguration ceremony of a weeklong Srimad Bhagwat Mahapuran had even said that he used to worship Panchayaan until he attended higher secondary school.

Nevertheless, the ghastly incident that took place in Pashupatinath Temple on Friday, say experts, could give a new frightening dimension to the ongoing conflict over the appointment of Indian main priests at the holy Hindu shrine.

Majority Nepali believe that Nepali nationals should be provided with the opportunity to become the main priest at the temple yet the Maoists’ ill treatment of the Indian priests, Sri Raghabendra Bhatta and Sri Giris Bhatta could turn the entire episode into the war between the atheists and the Hindus.

The Maoists’ cadres, disguised in religious attire, revealingly carrying flowers while carrying iron rods and hammers in a concealed manner, entered the sacred Hindu religious site.

The Maoists cadres around 1:00 PM entered the main temple, dragged the two priests out of Gupta Bas and tore their religious clothes and break their sacred threads (Janai).

Earlier, the Maoists’ cadres raised provocative slogans such as, “Down with the Indian priests” which had brought heart into the mouth of the priests, reports declare.

After the situation turned nasty, the Indian embassy officials too had arrived at the venue.

Thus, the stage is set for a cold war in between the Hindus world over and the
Maoists in Nepal.

How the Hindus worldwide take up this issue will have to be watched.

In the mean while, the Maoists affiliated struggle committee has said that it was not involved in this ghastly incident.
