Govt withdraws annuities given to Nepal’s VP Jha after he declines taking fresh oath

Kathmandu, 06 September, (Asiantribune.com): The government has withdrawn all the state privileges of Vice President Parmananda Jha after he refused to take fresh oath in Nepali language within seven days as ordered by the Supreme Court two weeks ago.

The government on Friday evening withdrew army personnel deputed for his security and removed national flag hoisted at his private residence at Gaurighat, Kathmandu.

A total of 75 army personnel led by a lieutenant-colonel and other security personnel from the Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force and the National Intelligence Department were deputed for the security of Vice President Jha.

Earlier on Thursday, the government had not invited Vice President Jha to attend Indra Jatra festival keeping in view of the apex court order. Traditionally, President, Vice President and the Prime Minister, among other senior members in the government, observe the festival.

The apex court two weeks ago had passed a verdict that Vice President Jha take a fresh oath in Nepali language, nullifying the oath of office and secrecy he took in Hindi language last year.

The government decision to withdraw state privileges from Jha comes in the wake serious controversy over his current status. Some constitutional lawyers say that Jha now reverts to being vice president-elect while others say that the position has become vacant after he refused to abide by the court’s order to take fresh by last Sunday.

A 21-man team from the Armed Police Force (APF) led by an inspector has now been deployed to guard Jha´s house in view of possible security threats to him. This is just an informal security arrangement. He will no longer have a bodyguard nor will he be escorted by security personnel.

The national flag hoisted at Jha´s residence was removed in the presence of a Home Ministry representative at about 6 p.m. The flag-hoisting in the morning and its removal in the evening are regular ritual at the residence of very very important persons (VVIPs) like the vice president.

Officials at the Home Ministry say that the government will arrange some other ´necessary´ security detail than the APF team as Jha is considered to have been facing a special level of threat.
