Trinamool Congress to contest Arunachal Assembly poll

Posted by Ramesh Khati on September 10, 2009

Itanagar, Sep 9 (PTI) The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress will contest the October 13 elections to the 60-member assembly in Arunachal Pradesh for the first time.

State Trinamool Congress president, Kito Sora, a former Congress legislator who switched over to the party said today he was leaving for Delhi with a list for finalisation of candidates.

Sora claimed support from legislators denied ticket from the Congress and said seven sitting legislators support the party.

According to him, most Congress MLAs denied tickets would prefer to join his party as they were impressed with party chief Mamata Banerjee.

A local Trinamool Congress leader said the elections in Arunachal Pradesh would take the party one step forward in securing national party status.

A party has to poll at least 6 per cent votes in four states to get a national party status. There are only five national parties at present.
