Darjeeling, Sept. 10(The Telegraph): The Student Union Council of Darjeeling Government College has called a 12-hour shut down tomorrow, demanding an immediate meeting of the governing body of the institution.

“For the past six years, the governing body has not met nor solved various problems plaguing the college. We demand that the meeting be held before September 18 (when the month-long Puja vacation begins). We have called a 12-hour strike tomorrow to press for the demand,” said Dhanraj Tamang, the general secretary of the SUC affiliated to the Gorkha Janmukti Vidyarthi Morcha.

The students also demonstrated in front of the district magistrate (DM)’s office today. Other demands of the SUC include filling up posts of 37 teachers and the principal. “For the past one decade, the college has been running without a full-fledged principal,” said Keshav Raj Pokhral, general secretary, Vidyarthi Morcha.

Lalita Ahmed, the officer-in-charge of the college, said: “We have requested the DM who is the president of the governing body, to convene the meeting.” Surendra Gupta, DM, said he would hold the meeting “immediately”.
