KURSEONG, 13 SEPT(The Statesman): the Jan Mukti Asthai Karmachari (JMAK) in association with the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) organised a public meeting at the Kurseong Motor Stand today. they also organised a massive public rally in the premises of Kurseong Town. During the meeting, the speakers demanded that all Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) casual workers (around 8,000) should be made permanent. They will be staging an indefinite hunger strike in front of different administrative offices including Pintail village near Siliguri from tomorrow.
The JMAK spokesperson, Mr Binanjay Gurung said: “We had several meetings with the state Government representatives and DGHC administrator Mr B L Meena but so far they have not fulfilled their promise of making the casual workers’ permanent. Therefore, we had no other choice than to to stage an indefinite hunger-strike until our demands are met. They should understand that if our demands are not fulfilled even after the hungestrike, we will commit self- immolation. But before this, there will be fire and bloodshed across the hills.
