Siliguri municipal election ends peacefully

Posted by Ramesh Khati on September 14, 2009

Siliguri (West Bengal) Sep 13 (PTI) The crucial municipal election in Siliguri, gateway to Darjeeling hills in West Bengal, ended peacefully today.

The election has emerged as a prestige fight between the Left Front, which held the previous board, and the Trinamool Congress-Congress alliance whose political graph in West Bengal is on rise.

The outcome of the Municipal Corporation election holds much importance to the Left Front which suffered one setback after another, both political and electoral.

For the Trinamool-Congress combine on the other hand, a favourable result would give it a headstart in north Bengal where its presence is not significant.

There are 47 seats in the fray and the result will be announced on Tuesday.

An estimated 80 per cent of the electorate cast their votes, according to poll information officer Jagadish Roy.

Repoll has been declared at Pateswari Prathamik Vidyalaya booth number two in ward no.
