NCP demands amendment to Arunachal act

Posted by Ramesh Khati on September 16, 2009

Itanagar, Sept 15 (PTI) The NCP, in the poll-bound Arunachal Pradesh, today demanded amendment to the controversial Protection of Indigenous Faith Act, 1994, which it said was discriminatory.

In its poll manifesto released today, the party said, the act was seen to be against the spirit of healthy democracy and secularism as enshrined in the Constitution.

“Religion is highly personal and the act forbids those embracing Christianity or any other faith. Therefore, such discriminatory laws need to be amended to respect the spirit of secularism,” the manifesto said.

Welcoming the grant of Rs 50 crore corpus fund to the Ramakrishna Mission hospital here after the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last year, the party demanded an extension of the same for hospitals, schools and orphanages run by Christian missionaries in remote parts of the tribal state.
