Khanal returns, reiterates UML goal is constitution-writing

Posted by Ramesh Khati on September 30, 2009

KATHMANDU, Sept 29(REPUPLICA): Chairman of Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) Jhala Nath Khanal said on Tuesday that writing of the constitution would be at the center of any agreement that aims to end political deadlock.

Speaking to mediapersons at the Tribhuvan International Airport after returning from his six-day visit to Kazakhstan, Khanal said, “Concrete agreement was needed but it needed to focus on the writing of the constitution in time.”

His remarks are similar to the one he expressed when he left for Kazakhstan about a week ago. “It does not matter who leads the government or what kind of government is formed, the most important task at the moment is to draft a new constitution,” Khanal had said then.

A couple of days ago in Biratnagar, Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad had said similar to what Khanal has been saying: that who led the government was not important; rather writing of the constitution is.

The UCPN (Maoist) and the Nepali Congress leaders have been saying that agreement to end the political deadlock would be reached after Khanal returned.

Khanal told the reporters he was not in contact with leaders of other political parties during his absence.

The UML chief had left for Kazakhstan to take part in the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAP) there on Wednesday.
