Gangtok, October 5 (Media Cell Sikkim) : The apex body of the Indian Gorkha community, Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP) has strongly condemned the massacre of 12 innocent persons including 7 Nepali speaking persons by militants at Bhimjuli village, Sonitpur district in Assam.

Strongly condemning the incident in a press conference here today, BGP working president CK Shrestha and Prabin Khaling ( National Excutative commitee Member from Sikkim) today slammed Assam government for failing to take appropriate preventive measures.

Locals have alleged that that Assam government did not take the matter seriously even as the extortion activities of National Democratic front of Bodoland ( NDFB) militants were going on in the area, said Mr. Shrestha. Yesterday also the militants had demanded a large sum of money from the residents of the Gorkha dominated area of Bhimjuli but the residents had resisted the militants and had demanded protection from the State government which led to massacre by the NDFB militants, he claimed.

“If the Assam government had taken the matter seriously by providing adequate security, lives of so many innocent people would have not been lost”, said the BGP working president. He further informed that the Assam State unit of BGP will be preparing a report on the massacre and meet the State government for compensation and proper security arrangements in the area.

The BGP central committee also demands an immediate intervention from the Centre, said Mr. Shrestha. He informed that a memorandum has already been faxed to the President and Prime Minister of India.

Mr. Shrestha warned that a nationwide protest will be launched by BGP if the government fails to make proper security arrangements for the Indian Gorkha community.

Meanwhile, the Assam State unit of BGP has called a 12 hour strike tomorrow at Sonitpur district to register its protest against the killings. Protest rallies will also be taken out by BGP in several areas of the district, it is informed.
