Old settlers mull judicial remedy on IT exemption

Posted by Ramesh Khati on October 22, 2009

Gangtok, Oct 21 (PTI) The Old Settlers Association of Sikkim is planning to seek judicial remedy on the exclusion of families of old settlers of the state from income tax exemption.

“We will explore the option to seek judicial remedy for income tax exemption for the old settlers’s families at tomorrow’s meeting of the Association as the state government appears to have washed off its hands,” a source in the Association, which has been rebuffed by the state government on its demand for IT exemption, told PTI today.

“How can the Centre give benefit to one section of the society and exclude others when the constitution grants equal status for all? … How are we (the old settlers’ families) different from the local people in the eyes of the law when the constitution enshrines equal rights for all people?” the Association representative said.
