Sikkim poised to come up on country’s rail map

Posted by Ramesh Khati on October 30, 2009

New Delhi, Oct 29 (PTI) Sikkim is poised to come up on the country’s railway map with the laying of foundation of a broad gauge rail link tomorrow between Rangpo in the hill state and Sevoke in Darjeeling district of West Bengal.

Vice President Hamid Ansari will lay the foundation of the Rs 1339.48 crore project which is aimed at giving a boost to the state’s economy and tourism.

The 52.7-km route, which is likely to be completed by 2015, has been declared a National Project given the socio-economic importance attached to it, according to a railway ministry official.

The alignment of this line traverses through Darjeeling district of West Bengal and eastern districts of Sikkim.

During the pre-independence era, a narrow gauge track used to connect the state to Siliguri in West Bengal. However, this section suffered a major damage in a severe earthquake in 1950.
