Bru refugees can return by mid November: Mizoram govt

Posted by Ramesh Khati on November 6, 2009

Aizawl, Nov 5 (PTI) Bru refugees, lodged at six relief camps in north Tripura following a Bru-Mizo ethnic clash in 1997 in Mizoram, can now return to the state by mid-November, state Home Secretary Lalmalsawma said today.

A state government team led by Lalmalsawma discussed the issue with Bru Coordination Committee representatives and the Ministry of Home Affairs official yesterday.

Lalmalsawma affirmed that Brus in the relief camps had been identified as bonafide residents of Mizoram and were also holding electoral photo identity cards.

“It is the stance of the government that all those who are already identified as bonafide residents of the state can return to Mizoram,” he told PTI.

The migrants are expected to resettle in the districts where they lived before migrating to Tripura in the 1997.
